What is Pediatric Neuropsychology?

Pediatric neuropsychology focuses on how brain development relates to learning, behavior, and emotions. Clinicians in this specialty assess and support children, adolescents and young adults with neurological, developmental, or psychological conditions that affect daily functioning.

What to Expect During a Neuropsychological Evaluation

A neuropsychological evaluation provides a detailed understanding of your child’s thinking and learning. Using standardized tests, caregiver and teacher input, and a review of schoolwork and prior assessments, we build a comprehensive picture of your child’s functioning. Evaluations may identify conditions such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, language disorders or emotional conditions, while also highlighting strengths. Families receive individualized feedback and practical recommendations to support success at home, in school, and in the community.

What are the different types of evaluations

Neuropsychological and psychoeducational evaluations differ in their purpose and depth. Psychoeducational evaluations focus primarily on academic performance, while neuropsychological evaluations offer a comprehensive look at cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. A neuropsychological evaluation assesses areas such as attention, memory, executive functioning, language, visuospatial skills, motor abilities, and academic achievement. This approach not only identifies that a child is struggling but clarifies why, supporting accurate diagnosis and targeted relief. These evaluations also consider developmental and neurological factors that may influence learning and behavior. Families receive a holistic understanding of their child, along with recommendations that may include school supports, therapeutic services, and medical follow-up when appropriate.

Are there other types of evaluation that might help me or my child?

All evaluations should bring answers and relief. You need to obtain a well-conceived treatment plan that can help address difficulties and struggles, while strengthening the things that are going well.

As mentioned, psychoeducational evaluations look mainly at school performance. A neuropsychological evaluation looks deeper—at how your child thinks, learns, behaves, and manages emotions.

Targeted psychological evaluations tend to be used when trying to understand emotional and behavioral factors, or problems with socializing, where there are no learning struggles. Early Childhood, or neurodevelopmental evaluations can also provide a way of understanding uneven patterns in a young child’s development. This type of assessment allows for a close examination of language, motor skills, social functioning and cognition/intelligence for young children who are between 1-5 years old.

What happens during the evaluation?

Most individuals find the evaluation experience to be interesting. The evaluator provides a set of activities and challenges that require them to solve problems and to demonstrate their ability to complete school work and other complex mental tasks.

Students will work one-to-one with the evaluator answering questions, drawing pictures, reading and writing, remembering novel information, focusing their attention and discussing their emotional reactions.

Your child will:

Individuals typically leave the evaluation sessions having felt like they completed a lot of work, but had an interesting experience.

We also gather information from parents and teachers. We review previous evaluations, individual education plans and examples of schoolwork.

Do you accept insurance? Do you have a sliding scale?

Our clinicians are out-of-network with all insurance plans. We provide documentation for families who wish to submit for potential reimbursement. Because coverage varies, we encourage families to contact their insurance provider in advance to understand possible costs and reimbursement rates.

We do not offer a sliding scale. Our fees vary based on clinician experience and training. We will be able to offer lower fee services as our team grows.

How do I prepare my child for the evaluation?

Ensure your child gets a full night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast.
Pack snacks—extras are always available in the office.
Explain that they’ll meet someone who will guide them through activities to learn how they think and solve problems.
During the intake appointment, we can tailor this explanation to your child’s needs.
Some children benefit from advance notice about schedule changes, while others may become anxious if told too early. We can discuss timing strategies during the intake session.
