What Can Families Expect

At Moving Forward Psychology, we believe that clarity reduces stress. From your first call to follow-up support, our process is designed to help families feel informed, supported, and confident every step of the way. Below is a clear, step-by-step overview of what you can expect.

Step 1: Initial Screening Call (15 Minutes)

Your journey begins with a brief screening call with one of our team members. This conversation is meant to be supportive and informative—not overwhelming.

During this call, we will:

  • Gather basic background information
  • Learn what services you are seeking
  • Answer any initial questions you may have
  • Help determine the most appropriate next steps
  • Assist with scheduling upcoming appointments

This call helps us understand your needs and ensures you are guided toward the right services from the very beginning.

Step 2: Clinical Interview (90 Minutes)

For most services, the first formal appointment is a 90-minute interview with parents, caretakers or young adults. This meeting allows us to gain a deeper understanding of your child and your concerns.

During this interview, we will explore:

  • Your reasons for seeking an evaluation or treatment
  • Specific concerns you have noticed at home or school
  • Any prior evaluations, therapies, or interventions
  • Your child’s developmental, medical, and educational history

This conversation helps us form a complete picture of your child and allows us to thoughtfully plan the evaluation or treatment process.

For your convenience, this interview can be completed via telehealth.

Step 3: Assessment Sessions (Neuropsychological Evaluation)

If your completing a neuropsychological evaluation, the process typically includes two longer testing sessions. These sessions allow us to conduct a thorough and comprehensive assessment of your child’s thinking, learning, and problem-solving abilities.

Before testing begins, we explain the process to your child in a simple, reassuring way. During the sessions, your child will work through a variety of activities, such as:

  • Answering questions
  • Building with blocks
  • Drawing
  • Reading and writing tasks
  • Math activities
  • Problem-solving challenges

Some activities will feel familiar, while others may be new. Most children find the sessions engaging and even enjoyable. No preparation is required—we guide your child through each task and ensure they feel comfortable and supported throughout the process.

Step 4: Feedback Meeting (90 Minutes)

Once testing is complete, we schedule a 90-minute feedback meeting with parents or, in some cases, with the young adult being evaluated.

During this meeting, the evaluator will:

  • Review and explain assessment results
  • Discuss your child’s strengths and areas of need
  • Provide individualized, practical recommendations
  • Help you understand how to apply these recommendations in daily life

Step 5: Child Feedback Meeting (30 minutes)

We will also schedule a brief 30-minute meeting with your child or teen to explain results in a developmentally appropriate way before including parents in the discussion.

Step 6: Comprehensive Written Report

Following the feedback meeting, our team prepares a detailed written report that serves as a clear reference and roadmap moving forward.

This report includes:

  • A clear explanation of evaluation results
  • Diagnostic information, when appropriate
  • Recommendations for school supports and services
  • Guidance for other professionals involved in your child’s care
  • Practical next steps for families

Reports are typically provided within 2–3 weeks of the feedback meeting.

Step 7: Follow-Up Support

We understand that new questions often arise after families have had time to review the report and begin implementing recommendations.

Our team remains available to support you, whether you need:

  • Clarification about results or recommendations
  • Assistance communicating with schools or treatment teams
  • Guidance on next steps or additional services

You are not expected to navigate this process alone—we are here to support you beyond the evaluation itself.
